Proposed London datacentre ‘incompatible’ with net zero with 1m-tonne carbon footprint

The proposed East Havering Data Centre Campus in North Ockendon is projected to emit over 1 million tonnes of carbon dioxide annually, equivalent to 8,480 flights to New York. Despite being marketed as a sustainable project, planning documents indicate that it does not align with net zero targets or a climate-compatible trajectory. The development is expected to generate more than 72 million tonnes of CO₂ equivalent over its 60-year lifespan, raising concerns about its impact on decarbonization efforts.
